Here are some books that you can read if you have time.
    Landline by Rainbow Rowell
I’m not sure if it’s because Rowell has tried writing from an adult perspective and I really prefer her young adult style. I was introduced to her writing when I learned about Eleanor and Park this year and I’m thinking she is going to be the author I need to follow no matter what she writes.
    Yes Please by Amy Poehler
I’m a big Amy Poehler fan. And I think every year you should pick someone you enjoy and read his or her books, and in this case, it’s Amy. I haven’t read Yes Please yet, but she is entertaining and funny, and from what I have read about the book, I plan to buy a copy this year.
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
A mystery that has been described as a psychological thriller(惊险读物), The Girl on the Train, is a must-read for those who love such stories. Hawkins’ first novel is the kind of book that keeps you up at night until you finish it. And everyone needs that kind of read now and then, right

Now Gates - who has been labeled a "greedy" reader - has released a list of his favorite books of the year. All of the books are standout reads, according to the billionaire. most of which are focused on business and economy.
Here are Bill's top four picks for the year (with parts of his full review of each book).
    Business Adventures, by John Brooks
Brooks' collection was published in 1969 and remains one of Gates' favorites. He re-read it again this year, labeling it the "best business book I've ever read."
"Shortly after we met, Warren Buffett lent me this collection of New Yorker business articles front the 1950s and 1960s. I loved them as much as he did. Brooks' insights (洞察力)about business have aged beautifully, and they are as true today as ever."

One moment it was quiet and calm in the forest, the next, the air was charged with tension. The elephant had heard the distant alarm calls of animals and her mood suddenly changed.I urged the elephant deeper into the forest. We sounded like a forest fire - crackling, snapping, trailblazing. But through all the noise came a sharp warning cry.The elephant stopped and we heard it again - the telltale call of a spotted deer.
I looked quickly around the shadows of the forest.Rays of sunlight shone through tree branches, beneath which the patchwork (交错) of green plants and shadowswithinshadows would make tiger stripes (条纹) look more attractive.Apart from an occasional noise from the elephant’s stomach, the forest was silent.
Gradually, the tension slipped from our bodies. The elephant seized a nearby branch and put it into her mouth.I reached forward and gently moved my hand over the elephant’s neck; there was a soft part, free of wrinkles and hairs, behind her ear.

"One City One Book" is a generic name (通称) for a community reading program that attempts to get everyone in a city to read and discuss the same book.Popular book picks have been Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird,Ernest Gaines’s A Lesson Before Dying, and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.
"One City One Book" programs take the idea of a localized book discussion club and expand it to cover a whole city. The first such program was "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book" in 1998,started by Nancy Pearl at Seattle Public Library’s Washington Center for the Book. The book chosen for the program was The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks, written in 1991.Other cities copied the idea, and the Library of Congress listed 404 programs occurring in 2007.
Each city’s program has its own goals;these typically include building a sense of community and promoting literacy.Nancy Pearl warns against expecting too much from a program:"Keep in mind that this is a library program,it’s not an exercise in civics, and that it’s not intended to have literature cure the racial divide. This is about a work of literature."

    Tina Rees, 50
    English teacher (Canadian)
I wanted to be a doctor and help people. I was always playing doctor with dolls, wrapping their arms and legs in tissues! My mom was a nurse, and my two sisters are now nurses, but I went into finance. The educational requirements to be a doctor are too much for me now, but I feel I’m helping people and contributing to society as a teacher.
    John Podeszwa, 45
    English school owner (American)
I’ve always loved animals, and as a little boy I first wanted to be a frog, then a chimp. When told I had to be something human, I chose zookeeper. I worked at a zoo in high school, but I wouldn’t want to do that job now, although I am fulfilling my dream of helping rescued animals, since I own a honey bear, an albino snake (患白化病的蛇), a dog and some cats!
    Miwa Gilligan, 48
    Parttime worker (Japanese)
As a little girl I wanted to be many things, and when my grandmother suggested that as an actress I could play various roles, that stuck with me. The Takarazuka Revue (宝冢歌剧团) was popular during my childhood, so that also inspired me. Of course I would still like to become an actress.

There are probably no people on Earth who like to gossip (说闲话) as much as the British. If prying into other’s lives were an Olympic sport, then Team GB would surely take the gold medal.
And when the British can’t watch the lives of real people with glee, they have another source of entertainment to fall back on-the soap opera.British soap operas are very different to US TV dramas. For one, they are normally longer running. The two most popular,Coronation Street and Eastenders, have been running for 48 and 24 years respectively. Both are broadcast several times a week,so remarkably there have been more than 7,000 episodes of Coronation Street.
The most obvious difference is that, unlike US dramas, the British soap operas focus on the real world. There is little glamour, the stars are rarely rich, and they normally have boring jobs.Perhaps the appeal is that the lives of the characters often mirror the lives of the audience-but with some drama added. This means the viewer can relate to the characters and feel the pain and happiness they go through on the show.

Contrary to popular belief, looking at someone’s face alone is not enough to tell us whether they are roaring in celebration or screaming in frustration, researchers claimed. While people may believe they have the ability to read each other’s faces, body language is the real clue that shows whether strong emotions someone is feeling are positive or negative.
In a study, groups of participants were shown a series of facial expressions such as tennis players photographed just after winning or losing a point.
In some cases the volunteers were able to see the player’s full body, but in others they were only shown either their face or their body with the other removed.
Participants could clearly tell whether the players were winning or losing when they were shown the full picture or just the body, but their guesses were no better than chance when based on the face alone.
Those who were allowed to see the full image were convinced they had made their judgment based on the players’ facial expressions even though results from the two other groups suggested otherwise.

Walk down the drinks section at the supermarket.Look in the drink cooler in your local convenience store.A new drink is taking up more and more space on the shelves, and that drink is water.Bottled water sales in the US rose to 1.7 billion gallons in 2010 for plastic bottles alone, compared to total sales of only 700 million gallons in 1990.Whereas bottled water was once associated only with the rich and the privileged (特权阶层),it is now regularly drunk by people at all income levels despite the fact that the price of bottled water can be between 240 and 10,000 times higher per gallon than tap water. What accounts for this surprising increase in demand
Traditionally, people have drunk bottled water for health reasons. The practice of "taking the waters" originated with the Romans, who believed that a person developed a healthy mind by building a healthy body.Across Europe, drinking or bathing in mineral water has been associated with the power to cure various diseases.Health spas at Evian in France and Pellegrino in Italy began bottling water so that their consumers could continue their treatments at home. The consumers in the 21st century are also concerned about health. However,in America, where the habit of drinking bottled water is relatively new,the concern is often more related to the purity or sterilization (
