This dog just may be the world’s largest pit bull(比特犬).Only 18-month-old,Hulk weighs 175 pounds.
Despite his large size, his owners Marlon Grannan and his wife Lisa Grannan say Hulk is a sweet family dog and a best friend to their 3-year-old son Jordan.
Online videos and photos of Hulk with their son in their New Hampshire home break down wrong views about pit bulls as cruel monsters(怪物).
Grannan’s son can be seen riding Hulk, singing with him and sleeping with him.
“He’s a wonderful and excellently trained dog,”Grannan said.“He plays with my kid,he’s great with the family and he’s so,so sweet.”
“Because pit bulls are only in the media when bad things happen, this myth of them as monsters gets perpetuated(使永存),”Grannan added,“but it’s not true. They might not be for everyone, but with a good leader and proper training, they make amazing family and protection dogs.”
Grannan and his wife are the owners of Dark Dynasty K9s,family-owned kennel(养狗场) that raises and trains American pit bulls as protection dogs for customers worldwide.Dark Dynasty K9s is also a member of the American Dog Breeders Association and the United Kennel Club.

Rafi and Dvora Meitiv were walking home from the park recently in Silver Spring,Maryland, when they were suddenly stopped by the police.
The Montgomery County Police gave the kids a stern(严厉的) warning about walking alone, put them in the car and drove them home.
“I looked out and saw the police and thought,‘Oh my God,what did they do’”said their father Alexander Meitiv.“I asked‘did they do something’,they said‘no,’I said,‘OK,I’ll take my children,’then I realized they wouldn’t let me take them.”
Maryland Child Protective Services then accused the Meitivs of neglect(疏忽),saying unless they committed a safety plan to the police, the kids would have to go into foster homes(寄养家庭).In Silver Spring, leaving anyone under 18 unsupervised(无人看管的) is considered as neglect.
Before the police found them,Rafi and Dvora, ages 10 and 6,said they used to run around outside and cross the street by themselves all the time.Their parents,Alexander and Danielle Meitiv, said they trust their kids and want to give them the freedom to make mistakes, away from the parental safety net.

Earth’s next superpower
The following countries have been sitting on hidden talents. And now they’re about to fly.
Nigeria says it pumps out as much oil as the other two oil-producing countries,Kuwait and Iraq. All this oil is cycling cash into the Nigerian economy and creating extremely rich businessmen.Analysts say that if Nigeria can improve its schools and technology,it could balloon into the world’s 13th largest economy by 2050,right between Turkey and Italy. If that reason is not enough for optimism,Nigeria’s president also has the sunniest name of any world leader:Goodluck Jonathan.
As agriculture has given way to industry, unemployment in Vietnam has dropped.
What’s Vietnam’s trickIt’s ready to work.Other countries’ laborers aren’t as cheap as they used to be,which makes Vietnam a relative bargain for companies that need new factories abroad. However, the country has almost no railroads, its highways are in poor condition, and its largest city has just one airport, which was built before the Vietnam War.So what’s the use of producing export-ready goods if there’s no convenient way to ship themThe good thing is,however, officials are widening highways, building a new airport and so on.

Trees take years to grow, sometimes centuries!Shubhendu Sharma has found a way to grow native forests anywhere in the world. The six-part process was improved after Sharma learned the ins and outs of producing healthy trees from Akira Miyawaki,an award-winning botanist(植物学家) who has planted over 40 million trees around the world.
The two met while Sharma was working at Toyota, when Miyawaki was appointed to plant a forest for a car company. After volunteering with Miyawaki,Sharma quit his job to take on a new career path—planting trees. The fruits of his labor culminated in(终获某种结局)the for-profit company Afforestt, which plants native forests around the world for customers ranging from farmers and corporations to city governments.
Trees are one of Mother Nature’s greatest gifts as they clean the air, save water, attract various animals and species, conserve energy and much more.Sharma applied his industrial engineer background to trees by creating a computer program that registers tree species’ parameters(特性) in order to find the best combination of trees that will form a forest.Afforestt is promoting their standardized method for seeding thick,fast-growing native forests in poor lands, with such remarkable results like a multilayered forest of 300 trees that is grown on a small space.

A new system has been developed to measure the health of the world’s oceans.Scientists say the system will change the way we think about oceans and how they affect our lives. It is called the Ocean Health Index. The index is designed to tell if anything is wrong with the oceans and,if so,what can be done about it.
Whether you live in the United States or in the middle of Africa, you should care about what happens to the oceans.
Most of the oxygen that you breathe comes from the ocean. The oceans are the primary climate adaptation system. They absorb carbon. If you want to know what the Earth would be like without an ocean you’ve got plenty of examples in our solar system—all those hot, dusty, dry, cold inhospitable(荒凉的) places are basically that way because they do not have a liquid ocean to provide all these benefits, including food. One out of four people on the planet get their daily source of protein from the ocean.
The Ocean Health Index uses two hundred separate measurements.Once a year, scientists will use it to announce whether the oceans successfully passed the test.

In this competition, you can do that in anything from 150 words to 500,but they should be your words, and fresh ones.We do expect you not to hide the truth or the facts about your experience.Beyond that, you can make the most of the freedom travel writing gives you.

Music can make us feel happy or peaceful, energize us to dance,or move us to tears. As an orchestra conductor,Amy Andersson allows people to experience the many feelings that music can inspire.
Andersson fell in love with music as a child. She sang in school choirs and musicals starting in first grade, began studying piano at age seven, and started composing at age nine.Although her school district had no orchestra, she says,“I bought many recordings of the world’s great orchestras and conductors and listened to them for hours on end.”
During a concert, the audience sees the back of a conductor and the arm movements she or he uses to lead the orchestra. What audiences do not see is all the work the conductor has done beforehand to prepare for the performance—first alone, and then in rehearsals(排练) with the orchestra.
Months before a concert,Andersson studies a piece of music by playing it on the piano. She decides how she wants each section to sound.Should it be fast or slowLoud or softShe listens to recordings, reads about the composer’s life, and reviews historical events that would have influenced the composer. Her goal is to recreate the music as the composer intended.

If I had to choose what language to learn next,it’s a tough decision but it’d probably be German because many people that know several languages tell me that German is their favorite language in terms of expressing themselves. And I think it might have something to do with the vast amount of vocabulary the German language has.So I think it’d be really difficult but a fun challenge.
I think I’d like to learn French next because it’s a very romantic(浪漫的) language and it could be very useful in different job situations.Besides,I think it could help me understand English a bit more as well, since it was previously the language of diplomacy(外交).
I’d love to learn Italian next.I visited Milan last year and I think it would be great to be able to speak to some of the locals. Also,it’s quite similar to Spanish,so I don’t think it would be too confusing.

Robots have proven very useful in different situations. But those robots are small remote-controlled tanks with a mechanical arm,and they can get hung up on narrow stairwells(楼梯井) and are stopped by ladders.“A lot of the places where you do disaster recovery are only accessible for people,”says Marc Raibert, the president of Boston Dynamics, which is providing advice and help for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA)—the scientific research department of the U.S. military(军队)—to create the most advanced robots on earth.“If you’re a humanoid—a machine or creature with the appearance and qualities of a human—access can be increased and you can use available tools.”In the future DARPA hopes,a humanoid robot will be able to drive trucks, and enter power plants.
That future is a long way off.Simple movements like squatting(蹲) are almost impossible for something with metal parts and skin that cannot bend, says Raibert.Still, recent progress is impressive enough that the military has begun to bet on legged bots. The Office of Naval Research is working with Virginia Tech on a humanoid firefighting robot, and Dynamics showed off two of its latest projects:Cheetah,a four-legged robot capable of running 28 miles per hour, and the Legged Squad Support System,a big and awkward headless robot funded by DARPA and the Marine Corps to help carry things in pla

A French Canadian design group has greatly improved the classic swing set.Created by Montreal-based group Daily Tous Les Jours,The Swings is a large set of multicolored seats that emulate(仿真) a range of musical instruments as people swing. However, there is one rule required to reach the activation(活化、活性化) of The Swings—people must cooperate. When users work together to swing in unison(一致地),they are rewarded with a perfectly pleasant tune.
“The Swings is a game where, from the start, you need to adjust to the actions of others,”Mouna Andraos,Daily Tous Les Jours founder, said.
The Swings made its first American appearance at the Green Box Arts Festival,in Green Mountain,Colorado, last summer. After being awarded a grant(经费) from the Knight Foundation,The Swings will have month-long stays in Charlotte,North Carolina；Macon,Georgia；Philadelphia；and San Jose,California, over the course of the next year.Currently,The Swings is in storage until the first city of the tour has been designated(指定).
